Eleanor Burns at Brookhaven Retreat Center! March 11-15, 2009 Twenty five years ago Eleanor Burns introduced her first Quilt in a Day book, cultivating a quiltmaking revolution. She presented her unique style, a diverse combination of cutting and sewing applications, creating new techniques altogether. Quilting techniques that replaced scissors and templates with rips and strips, bringing rotary speed to patchwork. She also presented an incredibly rapid stitching system, applying the method of assembly-line sewing to piece work. This invited all types of sewers to participate in an age-old tradition. Her concise, step-by-step directions were easy to grasp, allowing the possibility for anyone to be successful at making a quilt. Eleanor Burns gave quiltmakers techniques that compacted months into merely a day, a quilt in a day, spreading her vibrant enthusiasm within everyone. She motivated thousands of want-to-be quilters with needed-confidence and assurance. Altogether, the impact of her influences opened the door to a renewal. Her efforts sowed the seeds that have grown into many techniques that are commonly used today. Since then, her name and techniques have become synonymous with quiltmaking because her contributions and life's story are equal in inspiration and fate brought to the art of piecing a beautiful quilt. Classes: During the retreat, Eleanor will be teaching 3 classes featuring the quilts pictured below; The Magic Vine Quilt, Fly Boy, and Pink Lemonade. Retreat Enrollment will include 2 classes while at the retreat, just let us know which ones you would like when you submit your reservation. The Magic Vine Quilt Grow a flower garden in beautiful fabrics to grace your bed or wall as Eleanor Burns presents Magic Vine. This quilt originated in the 1930's in a newspaper quilt column written by Florence LaGanke Harris. Twenty-two flowers are appliqued in rows with twinning vines. It is magical because of the variety of flowers that grow on the vine. The vine grows quickly, like the magic vine in Jack and the Beanstalk. Learn to make these whimsical flowers and leaves using a variety of applique techniques and finishing stitches. Finished twin size 65"x 100"; Finished full/queen size 92" x 110".

Fly Boy Eleanor's book, Victory Quilts takes a look back in history to the 1940’s and life on the home front during the War years. This Sampler Quilt offers patterns and techniques for 20 blocks, each one representing a slice of history with a story to tell. Fly Boy features the Airplane block and the Propeller block. Both represent women's roles in the war; the WASP, Women Airforce Service Pilots, who were the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft, and the the six million women who worked in the manufacturing plants that produced munitions and materials. This is an easy to intermediate quilt, and is pieced. The finished quilt measures 57"x 72".

Pink Lemonade Pink Lemonade is a One Block Repeat quilt set together with Latice and cornerstones using two basic patches, the Four-Patch and the Chevron. The Chevron is made by combing two Flying Geese patches, and the Chain connecting the blocks is simply a Cornerstone block. Learn Eleanor's techniques for strip piecing and using her Flying Geese ruler, and you'll have this beautiful quilt in a jiffy. Finished twin size 67"x 106"; Finished full/queen size 88" x 106".

A Very Special Christmas Present

It was the day after Christmas at a church in San Francisco. The pastor of the church was looking over the cradle when he noticed that the baby Jesus was missing from among the figures. Immediately he turned and went outside and saw a little boy with a red wagon, and in the wagon was the figure of the little infant, Jesus.

So he walked up to the boy and said, "Well, where did you get Him, my fine friend?"

The little boy replied, "I got him from the church."

"And why did you take him?"

The boy said, "Well, about a week before Christmas I prayed to the little Lord Jesus and I told him if he would bring me a red wagon for Christmas I would give him a ride around the block in it."
