For more than 20 years, as a quilter and several years as a shop owner, Ohio-based Penny Haren has been developing and teaching techniques that make it quick, easy and fun for quilters —even beginners—to create intricate blocks with stunning results. Her technique, Pieced Appliqué™, eliminates y-seams; inset points and curves from even the most complicated blocks. Quilts and blocks that you might never have considered are now not only possible but a breeze.
Though they are not her only books, Penny Haren’s Pieced Appliqué, and the sequel More Pieced Appliqué, feature 25 different blocks that were created using her techniques. Intricate Blocks Made Easy – the third in the series of block patterns was released in March, 2010.
She has also designed the Square It Up and Fussy Cut rulers for Creative Grids™ that help add the “ahhh” factor to all of your projects. There are holes drilled in the rulers so that you can center a design in your fabric right where you want it – quickly and easily.
Constantly adding to her resume, Penny has had a very eventful year with new items. She designed a fabric line for Henry Glass that came out in May of 2010, and is also developing a line of quality notions that are only available through Independent Quilt Shops.
In her “spare time”, Penny consults with and writes the newsletter for Checker Distributors, and writes a notions column for Fab Shop News – a bi-monthly publication for shop owners.
Thursday Night Meet & Greet at 7pm
On Thursday evening, we invite everyone to stop by the shop for a special Meet & Greet time with Penny at 7:00pm! She will be available to sign books, and will even give us a very interesting and informative demo of her Creative Grid Rulers. It should be a very exciting time, and we want everyone to show up!
Due to limited room and seating area, there is a $10 Ticket Fee, which you will need to purchase in advance. We can not guarantee that tickets will be avaliable at the door that night, so get your tickets now.
* That night only, tickets may be exchanged for $10 off any Creative Grids ruler. *
Friday, November 12th:
Penny Haren’s Pieced Appliqué™
Create perfect results by combining piecing with layered appliqués that make it possible to sew perfect points and curves – by eliminating them! Don’t let the “A” word intimidate you! In this freezer paper method, straight sides and gentle curves can be turned by even a beginner after a five minute demonstration!
Learn tricks to make it possible to piece perfect four-patches, nine-patches, pinwheels – and the correct way to set a block on point. Then learn how to add pieced appliqué to these blocks to turn ordinary into extraordinary!
No longer avoid blocks that have inset points such as the Bright Hopes block. Cutting appliqués from a four-patch makes a Hummingbird block a piece of cake – or actually a “piece of four-patch”! Set a square on point and learn how to avoid bias edges. Then cut a curved appliqué from one of the pieced blocks and turn a simple curve – without ever having to sew it on the sewing machine - or clip the curve. Trim up half-square triangles – the easy way – and guarantee that the center of your pinwheel matches every time.
This technique opens the door to limitless opportunities! You will never look at a quilt pattern the same way again!
In this class, you will learn:
- To make four different 6” blocks
(Hummingbird; Boston Uncommon; Sarah’s Choice; and Whirligigs) - Four different techniques – and a multitude of quick piecing methods.
Saturday, November 13th:
Create perfect results by combining paper-piecing with pieced appliqué to create perfect blocks every time! Explore four different techniques in this six hour class and learn a multitude of paper-piecing tricks along the way.
When making the Tall Pine Tree #94 block, learn how to combine two paper-pieced units – after creating a row of triangles with the placement of one appliqué.
Create the Flower Pot #37 block by piecing squares and rectangles together – and adding them as one paper-pieced unit. Then add a few squares and triangles to create the flowers. Simply charming!!!
Sometimes, simple paper-pieced units can be sewn around a center square – Bright Hopes style – to set a block on point. See how easy it is to piece Wild Geese #104. Perfection!
Sometimes we will turn appliqués and insert them AS we are paper-piecing! This technique eliminates sewing multiple units together – easy as pie….
