RETREAT PRIZES
We have become famous for our retreat prizes and this retreat will be no different! For each $10 you spend in the store you will be given a ticket that will be entered in a drawing for some really fantastic prizes. The drawing for the prizes will be held at the shop on Saturday at noon. Our grand prize will be a queen-sized beauty, fully quilted, even with the binding on it! We are sure you will be very pleased!
SEWING MACHINES
Bring your own or let us know if you need a loaner (we have a limited supply on hand). Here is another really cool thing: Each participant at this retreat will have their own table in the open sewing area! No sharing required.
GETTING HERE
The closest airport is Tyler (Pounds Field) although we are only about 100 miles east of DFW. The flight to Tyler from DFW will add some expense to your trip. Some auto rentals are very inexpensive these days especially if there are multiple people sharing the expense. Let us know if you choose to fly into Tyler and need someone to pick you up there.
WHAT ABOUT THE WEATHER?
One thing we can say about Texas, is if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes because it will change. We recommend cool, casual clothes, comfy shoes, and maybe a light sweater for the evenings. The temperature in October is usually in the 70s-80s, so it is quite comfortable.

Eleanor Burns Retreat!
Stitchin' Heaven Presents...
Eleanor Burns
at Brookhaven Retreat Center
March 11-15, 2009
Twenty five years ago Eleanor Burns introduced her first Quilt in a Day book, cultivating a quiltmaking revolution. She presented her unique style, a diverse combination of cutting and sewing applications, creating new techniques altogether. Quilting techniques that replaced scissors and templates with rips and strips, bringing rotary speed to patchwork. She also presented an incredibly rapid stitching system, applying the method of assembly-line sewing to piece work. This invited all types of sewers to participate in an age-old tradition. Her concise, step-by-step directions were easy to grasp, allowing the possibility for anyone to be successful at making a quilt. Eleanor Burns gave quiltmakers techniques that compacted months into merely a day, a quilt in a day, spreading her vibrant enthusiasm within everyone. She motivated thousands of want-to-be quilters with needed-confidence and assurance. Altogether, the impact of her influences opened the door to a renewal. Her efforts sowed the seeds that have grown into many techniques that are commonly used today. Since then, her name and techniques have become synonymous with quiltmaking because her contributions and life's story are equal in inspiration and fate brought to the art of piecing a beautiful quilt.
Magic Vine Quilt

Grow a flower garden in beautiful fabrics to grace your bed or wall as Eleanor Burns presents Magic Vine.
The patterns for Magic Vine originated in the 1930's in a newspaper quilt column written by Florence LaGanke Harris. As part of a series, LaGanke presented one new pattern each week. In addition to the pattern, the reader was treated to a fictitious story about a quilt group and their leader, Nancy Page. In the group, they shared stories, and decided on what colors to use for their flowers.
Twenty-two flowers are appliqued in rows with twinning vines. It is magical because of the variety of flowers that grow on the vine. The vine grows quickly, like the magic vine in Jack and the Beanstalk.
Whimsical flowers and leaves are easily made, using light-weight paper backed adhesive or the quick turn method using non-woven fusible interfacing. The outside edges are finished with a variety of techniques: satin stitch, blanket stitch, blind hem stitch, and hand applique.
Victory Gardens

Victory Quilts represents a look back in history to the 1940’s and life on the home front during the War years. This Sampler Quilt offers patterns and techniques for 20 blocks, each one representing a slice of history with a story to tell.
The blocks are traditional patterns, popular during that era and each one a symbolic remembrance: Sky Rocket recognizes the tragic bombing of Pearl Harbor; Broken Sugar Bowl brings to mind rationing during the War; Signal Light recalls air raid warnings; Army Star honors our Armed Services.
Along with strip piecing, Eleanor teaches her techniques for squaring up triangle pieced squares, appliqué, flying geese patches, Y seams, and much more. Make a Sampler Quilt “set on point” or straight set.
Quilts Through the Seasons

Eleanor has created a palette of quilt patterns to symbolize the months of the year.
Quilts Through the Seasons offers a whole year of patterns in various skill levels and quilt sizes. Some patterns are designed to be quick and easy while others offer a challenge as skills develop.
Join us for this great opportunity! The retreat will be held at the beautiful Brookhaven Retreat Center located in the Piney Woods of East Texas.
