The Teachers:

Barb and MaryBarb and Mary
Designers (and sisters), Barbara Groves and Mary Jacobson, of “Me and My Sister Designs” have had their hands in almost every aspect of the creative crafting industry.   These sisters and one-time shop owners have expanded their love of quilting and crafting into a business that now includes designing fabrics for Moda.  In addition they developed the SideWinder portable bobbin winder and produce and design patterns and books for their company.

They have great fun taking what they like to call “Everyday Color” and infusing it into their fabrics for Moda.  Moda Fabrics has been the leader in the quilting and notion industry for the past 30 years.  The sisters have been members of the Moda family for the past six years, and have designed 18 lines of fabric. In 2009, the sisters teamed up with Wrights and Simplicity to produce one of the biggest and most exciting new sewing notions to hit the industry, the “SideWinder” portable bobbin winder.  Due to its huge success, the “Deluxe SideWinder” was introduced internationally this spring.

They have been featured in several national quilting and sewing magazines.  The most recent being Better Homes & Garden’s Quilting August 2010 issue.  There is hardly a trade magazine that does not feature fabrics, designs or advertisements for their products.

Look for more exciting things to come from these two at meandmysisterdesigns.com .

Laurie Simpson
Laurie Simpson

A lifelong needle artist, Laurie’s quilts grace galleries, and private collections. She has been featured in Country Home, Coastal Living, Architectural Digest, American Patchwork & Quilting, McCall’s Quilting, Quiltmania, and Quilt Sampler Magazine. Her books include: Folk Art Friends; Everyday Folk Art, Modern Primitive Quilts, and Victory Girls.

A patchwork quilt in a magazine inspired Laurie to take up quilting at the age of fourteen. Drawn to traditional themes and techniques she prefers to piece, appliqué, and quilt by hand. “Handwork is calming and meditative. It’s the way I was meant to work,” says Laurie.

She joyfully spends her time quilting, creating, teaching, writing, and designing fabric for Moda Fabrics with her sister and design partner, Polly Minick.

Laurie lives with her husband, Bill, in Ann Arbor Michigan. They share their home with a rescue dog, Gibby.

Carrie NelsonCarrie Nelson

Just in case you don't already know this about Miss Rosie's Quilt Company, Rosie is Carrie Nelson's golden retriever. Carrie gives her top billing because she says she's prettier and nicer. At 12 years old, Rosie is a little bit less dignified than she'd like you to believe. A quilt isn't really a quilt until she's rolled around and slept on it. She still inspects every bag, box, and package that comes into the house, especially those boxes of fabric from Moda, since they're addressed to her anyway.

While Rosie isn't much of a quilter, she's an excellent quilting teacher. Her "golden rules" are simple: Play every day and enjoy it to the fullest. Jump into everything with unabashed enthusiasm and a passion for what you're doing. Don't worry about what anybody else thinks; as long as you're happy and having fun, that truly is the only thing that matters. And no matter what, always be open to new adventures, new ideas, and new challenges.

The Class Projects & Sewing Times:

Unbeliezeable quiltBarb & Mary's Project:
UnBelizeable!
61" x 72"

UnBeliezeable is just what you will say when you finish making this really fun, really easy project from Barb and Mary. You will start with Jelly Roll from their latest fabric collection (Please note that fabrics will differ than the ones in this image!) and you will end with a rainbow of delight from this braid quilt. And, of course, Barb and Mary will have you laughing all day long while you are sewing away! This finished quilt is 61" x 72" - just the perfect size!

School Girls Glen quiltLaurie's Project:
School Girls Glen
42" x 50"

Laurie will be using the latest collection by Minnick and Simpson for her project "School Girls Glen".  She selected this pattern for our cruise because she is just sure you will be able to finish most all of it in class and leave the cruise with a nice quilt.  It measures 42" x 50" and there is no stress at all over the stars as they float far enough out that there will be no tipping off points!  This project is one of Laurie's favorites and she is sure you will put it into your favorites file once you are finished with it.

NOTE:  Project shown is for design purposes only!  The fabrics used on our cruise will be different!

Lincoln quiltCarrie's Project:
Lincoln
75" x 75"

From the book "Another Bite of Schnibbles" you will just go crazy over this wonderful design.  We plan to bring a variety of wonderful layer cakes from some of Moda's best and newest collections for you to choose which one you would like the best for your onboard project.  You will make this big (75" x 75") nap-sized quilt in no time at all.  Why is it named "Lincoln"?  We'll have to ask Carrie that question!
