In 1693, the citizens of Salem, Massachusetts go into a frenzy when they discover that 3 among them -- Winifred, Sarah and Mary Sanderson -- are witches. Fearing their pagan villainy, the community agrees to hang the old hags. But head sorceress Winifred vows they'll come back to life one day and seek vengeance. 300 years later, Max, a cynical teenager stuck chaperoning his kid sister as she goes trick-or-treating, is spotted by classmate-dream girl Allison. In order to impress her, Max lures them into the Sanderson sisters' house where they accidentally bring the wretched shrews back to life. The witches now have one night to renew their life force -- or they'll disappear forever. Can the kids stop them from achieving their nasty purposes?
A side note
from Deb: I'll be honest with you - this movie got
terrible ratings from the "critics". But, when I tell
my friends we are going
to feature this movie they all giggle and say "That is one
of my favorite all-time movies!"
Hey, what do the
critics know about good movie's anyway? You'll enjoy
this one...I guarantee!
Our project for Hocus Pocus is perfect! We found this great fabric from Clothworks and one of our favorite designers - Diane Knott. Featured in this fun Halloween quilt is a panel with a great witch on her broom, a couple of great black cats (a star in the movie, by the way), and a mummy. This is truly a fun and easy quilt to pass the time watching this film over and over again!

Jackie (Susan Sarandon) and
Luke (Ed Harris) are divorcing after years of marriage and
two children, Anna and Ben. Their new stepmother, Isabel
(Julia Roberts), wants to be involved in the children's
life, but is unwilling to sacrifice anything for her work.
Jackie considers this to be selfish and rude, sparking a
conflict between the two women. When cancer enters the
picture, everyone is forced to grow in order to settle their
differences.
This is one of those films we all agree as women that we
love. We love the emotion and we love the quilts that
are shown throughout especially the scene where Susan
Sarandon has made a memory quilt using photo transfers for
her children.
Since"StepMom" is being
featured in September our project was designed to celebrate
Breast Cancer Awareness month.
All of us have been
touched by this devastating disease in some way or another.
This may be a quilt for you to make for yourself to
celebrate being a survivor or perhaps it will be a quilt you
will make to give to a friend. Either way you will
love working with these fabrics designed by Karen Neuberger
for Quilting Treasures. The quilt measures 60x72" so
if you want a queen quilt just order a 2nd kit!
Each kit will include a pair of fuzzy pink Breast Cancer
socks!

Behind
every love...is a great story. They say you never
forget your first love - that is certainly the case in The Notebook. A sweeping love story told by a man (James
Garner) reading from his faded notebook to a woman in a
nursing home (Gena Rowlands). The Notebook follows the lives of two North Carolina teens from
very different worlds. Still in her teens, Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) meets
local boy Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) at a Carnival. On the
spot, Noah senses that he and Allie are meant to be
together. Though she is a wealthy debutante and he a mill
worker, over the course of one passionate and carefree
summer in the South, the two fall deeply in love. We won't
spoil the story with details
but I will tell you that we will include a package of tissue
with your package this month. You'll love it!
Our project for The Notebook is made from the new fabric from Lakehouse Drygoods - Le Belle Rose. This fabric is so romantic that we selected the most romantic movie we could find to pair with it. This beautiful project measures about 50 x 50 and you will find it fun to make while you watch the movie. It will make a great quilt for even a small tablecloth.

The
emotionally charged adventure The Patriot tells the story of
Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a reluctant hero who is swept
into the American Revolution when the war reaches his farm
and the British endanger what he holds most dear. He takes
up arms alongside his idealistic patriot son, Gabriel, and
leads a rebel American Militia into battle against a
relentless and overwhelming Redcoat army. In the process, he
discovers that the only way to protect his family is to
fight for a young nation's liberty. This is a
wonderful film to remind us of what sacrifices have been
made and are being made to insure our continuing freedom.
Our quilt is "American Glory" designed by Retta Warehime and features a focus fabric made with prints from the John Grossman Collection of Antique Images - one of the most comprehensivearchives of Victorian and Edwardian graphic ephemera in the world. The quilt measures 45x65" and is a simple design. You will love having a quilt like this one to place on your sofa during the month of July to celebrate the freedom of America!

A STAR IS BORN was conceived as a comeback vehicle for Judy Garland, who gives a fascinating and heartrending performance in perhaps the finest work of her career. This film was director George Cukor’s first musical and first color picture; theA Star Is Born Mini Poster tale of a doomed Hollywood couple, it was a remake of the 1937 William Wellman movie with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. Garland plays young singer Esther, who saves Norman Maine (James Mason), a famous star, from making a fool of himself onstage. Maine is an alcoholic whose career is on the wane but who manages, nonetheless, to acknowledge Esther’s talent and help her jump-start a career in Hollywood. But as her star rises and his declines, Maine's misery grows. Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin provided Garland with songs that would become standards in her concert repertoire, including "The Man That Got Away," which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Song.
Our quilt is a design from Calico Carriage Quilt Designs appropriately titled "Evening Star". We are offering it from the 3-Sisters Basics fabrics by Moda. This is a large quilt (80" x 80") and you will love the fact that there are no diamonds - it is constructed with half-square triangles! This will be one of your most enjoyable projects ever!

Arthur
Golden's blockbuster bestseller, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, has
been brilliantly brought to the big screen by
Oscar-nominated director Rob Marshall (CHICAGO)
. The film opens in a remote Japanese fishing village in
1929, where two sisters, Chiyo and Satsu, are sold by their
troubled father to people who place Chiyo in a classy geisha
house known as an okiya. Chiyo becomes a maid to
Hatsumomo, a cold, controlling, and calculating geisha who
is instantly jealous of Chiyo's unusual, beautiful eyes and
childish innocence.
As Sayuri is trained in the art of
being a geisha, learning how to walk, talk, dance, and serve
(up to a point) in order to please and honor her
distinguished male clients, World War II looms on the
horizon, threatening to upend Japan and its old ways.
You will love this beautiful movie!
